Celebrating its 100th anniversary, Finland’s flag carrier, Finnair, has decorated two of its aircraft with special stickers to commemorate the momentous occasion.

Hong Kong-based design firm, Haeco, crafted the commemoratory livery—a picture of Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden, two characters featured in a series of books and a comic strip by Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson. Moomins were seen in Finnair aircraft livery in the mid-1990s, already.

Looking like two hippopotamuses hugging, they can be spotted beside ‘Bringing us together since 1923’ titles on the aft part of the fuselage of two of the carrier’s Airbus A350-900s. The first plane wearing the special colors will arrive in Helsinki from Hong Kong on March 6 and perform its first revenue flight to Tokyo-Haneda on March 7.

According to Finnair, the two widebodies will fly to several destinations across the carrier’s network, including London, Tokyo, Bangkok, and Dallas. In addition, within a section of its website dedicated to the centenary, the airline invites all Moomins and aviation fans to share photos and videos of the special livery on Instagram with the hashtag #finnairmoomin. One lucky spotter will be rewarded with two Business Class tickets to either Tokyo or Helsinki aboard one of the aircraft featuring the special livery.

“Finnair’s mission is to enrich life by bridging the world. This is also the theme of our centenary. Moomins represent friendship, community, and going on adventures together, so they are a great fit for our values,” says Finnair’s CEO Topi Manner. “Customers will be able to see the centenary in many ways throughout 2023, as we remember our heritage and look forward to the next 100 years.”

In addition to the Moomin livery, Finnair applied the centenary slogan ‘Bringing us together since 1923″ on three aircraft: one A350-900 and two A320-200s.

As it enters its 100th year of operations, Finnair boasts a fleet of 80 aircraft, including 17 A350-900s, eight A330-300s, 15 A321, 10 A320s, and six A319s.

The airline’s network covers Europe, Asia, and North America. In the U.S., Finnair flies nonstop from its hub in Helsinki to New York-JFK, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
