Understanding Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Being a call center supervisor is more than just a title and the ability to see how many calls your team has taken for the day.  These days, supervisors need to be true management professionals who are well versed in the legal aspects of overseeing employees.

As shown in the cartoon below, anyone can throw out acronyms associated with labor laws, which may or may not apply to a specific situation.  It is up to the supervisor to be familiar with such acronyms and have a basic understanding of their implications. Of course, involving Human Resources as soon as a situation arises is always a good idea.

As a precautionary course of action, call center management should attend human resources classes encompassing the various labor laws meant to protect employees.  Not knowing when to protect someone's job instead of disciplining them for breaking company policy, for example attendance, can be a very expensive proposition for employers. Specially when the information is so easily accessible to workers who do take the time to understand their rights, as they should, before taking any action.
