Mass Layoff

Mass Layoff

An unfortunate reality of the call center industry is the volatility of the employment conditions.  One moment you are getting paid quite well compared to other call center agents, and the next you are unemployed.

While there is nothing humorous about losing your job, some solace can be found in the fact that you are not alone.   Mass layoffs are part of the American way of life these days.  Companies of all sizes and in all industries find it necessary to lay off employees in an effort to stay afloat.

In some cases employees can be recalled to work, but normally, employees are left to fend for themselves.  Out of the chaos, a fact becomes very clear, as a worker you must become employable.  This reality may seem self evident, but it is much harder to implement than it would appear.

Workers must become a jack-of-all trades in order to be versatile, but at the same time must gain enough specialized knowledge to be of value. Is this possible?...maybe.  Employees must look well past the needs of their current employer and cultivate their own skills to prepare for the next job.

Instead of trying to move up to the next level within the organization, workers must labor to get hired somewhere else.  This type of mentality can actually turn misfortune into a great positive.  Salaries, for example,  can actually improve for people who are laid off because their new employers must pay market rate to hire them.  By contrast folks who get to keep their job, if any, may later realize that they have been underpaid all along.
